UPDATING MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

Way back in December, I sat down and wrote a list of my New Year’s Resolutions and what I wanted this year to look like. However, I always feel a little bit unmotivated to make a good start with them at the beginning of the year because it takes a while for me to snap out of the lazy Christmas mode and to break out of the January blues. However, now that it is April (how the hell did that happen???) I am finally ready to push myself to get a move on and start achieving these goals.

I think the easiest way to complete a set of goals is to start with something small. I have a list of films that I have been dying to see and for the last two years it has been one of my resolutions to watch every single one of them. However, for some reason I have been putting it off and instead spend most of my free time watching the same TV shows that I have already seen 43435 times. Instead of doing this I have decided to actually work my way through the list. Watching something new can take more concentration which is often a bit off-putting when I am tired from a long working day and just want to zone out. However, when I have watched one of these films it makes me feel like I have been more productive (even though I have still been glued to the TV screen) because I have thoroughly enjoyed something new that has challenged me.

My next resolution for the year is to complete my reading list. When I am on holiday I can get through at least two books a week but at home, for some reason it just feels too much like a chore. However, reading a book gives me a kind of satisfaction that I just can’t get from TV and it often makes me feel inspired and motivated. Again, it is hard to focus on a book after a day of work but once I push myself to actually do it, it makes me feel great. At the moment I have around 15 books waiting to be read and my list is only growing because I keep buying them without actually bloody reading them but… this is about to change.

Something I didn’t include in my NY resolutions but am now adding is to cut down on the time I spend on social media. Like most of us, one of the first things I do in the morning is check my Twitter and Instagram feed. It is how I find out what is going on in the world and to get some light entertainment to ease into my day. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with this and it is probably something that I will keep doing. However, I have often found that the mornings I decide to read The Happy Newspaper or a new post from one of my favourite bloggers instead, I am a lot more inspired and motivated for the rest of the day. I don’t just start my day with social media I usually end with it too but staring at a glaring screen before I go to bed usually means I have a rubbish sleep. So, I have decided to put my phone away an hour before I go to bed and maybe I’ll even pick up a book to read!

Taking better care of my body has been one of my resolutions for years. I keep adding it on each year without ever really taking it seriously but this is something that needs to change. I’m not looking for any drastic alterations but I’m definitely trying to get into the habit of throwing some more fruit into my diet, drinking water and green tea instead of coffee and to start exercising a lot more.

Since working full-time I have pretty much abandoned the idea of working out but now I want to put a stop to this. I have been going for morning runs (which I never thought I would do) and Zumba classes (a lot more fun than I was expecting) and I only want to keep adding new things to this list as I go on. I know that it is unrealistic to expect this to happen overnight but I’m hoping that a gradual change here and there will help me get out of these bad habits.

I am hoping that this will also help my skin. Taking better care of my skin is another one of my resolutions this year as for the past few months my skin has been the worst it has ever been. So, I decided to invest in some pricey skin creams and face masks and drink more water to help me achieve the glowy look I have been dreaming about.

I’m sure there will still be New Year’s resolutions on my list that I haven’t quite completed by the end of the year (because there always is) but I’m excited to see how far I get with them… stay tuned.

  1. Good thing we’re only 1/4 into 2018! You still have more opportunities to knock out your resolutions! I agree with you about starting small. I get overwhelmed by a big list! Good luck with completing your reading list!
